Sprint Updates the HTC EVO View 4G to Honeycomb 3.2

December 22, 2011

HTC EVO View 4G

Sprint announced this morning that it has updated the HTC EVO View 4G to Honeycomb 3.2.

Originally launching with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, this is a major update for the EVO View.  AlthoughIce Cream Sandwich is right around the corner, at least this tablet will finally be getting a version of the operating system built specifically with tablets in mind.

Due to the major change in the operating system structure, Sprint added some caveats to its announcement

Due to the unique structure of the Honeycomb layout, customers’ personalized widgets and screen setup will not remain after the upgrade. The device will revert to the out of the box home screen layout. Wallpapers, Widgets, Application shortcuts personalized by the user have been resized for optimal viewing and will need to be re-established.

Additionally, some third-party apps may not work with Honeycomb, a tablet specific operating system.  We recommend users remove the application, and check Android Market™ to see if an updated application is available, or contact the application provider.

As of right now you will need to run a manual update to get Honeycomb on your View, but over-the-air update will be coming sometime in 2012.   For those of you who want to get it right now, here are the instructions of what you must do:

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key and tap Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap System updates
  3. Tap HTC software update
  4. Tap Check now
  5. Tap OK to download and install the update. You will not be able to use your device during the update. Once the download is complete, your tablet may power off and back on to complete the software update. The status of the download can be checked in your task bar.
  6. Verify the software is updated by going to Menu>Settings>About Tablet>Software information.

It doesn’t look to be too difficult, so if you just can’t wait, get to updating!

Are you excited for the upgrade to Honeycomb on the HTC EVO View 4G?

700,000 Android activations per day

December 21, 2011
700,000 brand spanking new Android devices are taken online every day.

It's the latest milestone as Google's mobile brand continues to swell, at some points even seeming out of control. The new number was confirmed by Andy Rubin, the Googler in charge of Android.

Rubin made his last official "this is how many Android devices are being activated every day" announcement back in June. At that time there were 500,000 activations per day.

So the rate at which new Android-powered phones and tablets ar...

Amazon weighed buying RIM

December 21, 2011

Research In Motion Ltd has turned down takeover overtures from Amazon.com Inc and other potential buyers because the BlackBerry maker prefers to fix its problems on its own, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Amazon hired an investment bank this summer to review a potential merger with RIM, but it did not make a formal offer, said one of the sources. It is not clear whether informal discussions between Amazon and RIM ever led to specific price talk, or who else had approach...

2012 MacBook Pro and iPad could get a Retina Display

December 21, 2011

We’ve been seeing references to HiDPI display modes in OS X Lion and iOS iPad for a while now, which has helped cement rumors that Apple will release a Retina Display MacBook Pro, at least, in 2012.

As such, today’s report that Apple left a big reference to HiDPI mode intact in developer builds of OS 10.7.3 isn’t a big surprise. The functionality can be seen in Finder’s “Get Info” window, and allows you to open a file or app in HiDPI mode, which (while non-functional right now) w...

Nearly Every Major Apple Product Will Have A Major Redesign In 2012

December 21, 2011

Are you ready for 2012? Tighten your seat belts, here comes the start of chatter about an iPad update and iPhone 5 Part Deux. The 2011 iPhone 5 that morphed into the iPhone 4S, plus a wider range of iPads could set Apple up for either just a good 2013 or a spectacular 2013. Either way, don’t expect a repeat of the monster revenues predicted to end 2011.

Apple watcher Gene Munster, analyst with Piper Jaffray, believes a redesigned iPhone 5 could appear in mid-2012. The new handset could spor...
